I study agent architecture for a living. I spend my days thinking about how AI systems reason, plan, and act across long contexts. From an agent architecture perspective, this matters enormously. Big Tech’s AI spending spree has driven valuations to new highs, and investors are clearly pleased. The numbers are staggering — OpenAI’s data center partners are reportedly set to rack up nearly $100 billion in debt, with banks potentially lending another $38 billion to Oracle and Vantage alone to build out infrastructure. These are not bets being placed cautiously. This is a full-throttle capital commitment to a future that the people writing the checks believe is already decided.
For those of us who think carefully about what AI agents can actually do today versus what the marketing implies, this spending pattern is worth examining closely. Infrastructure at this scale takes years to come online. The companies building it are betting that demand — from tokenmaxxing engineers, from enterprise deployments, from agentic workflows that don’t fully exist yet — will grow fast enough to justify the debt load. That’s a specific and contestable claim about the trajectory of AI capability and adoption.
What the spending spree also does, less visibly, is concentrate the ability to experiment. When you need $100 billion in data center capacity to stay competitive, the number of players who can meaningfully participate in frontier AI development shrinks. The tokenmaxxers at OpenAI aren’t just power users — they’re operating inside an infrastructure moat that is getting deeper by the quarter.
The Anxiety Gap Is an Information Gap
Public anxiety about AI isn’t irrational. But a significant portion of it is being generated by an information asymmetry rather than by direct experience with the technology. People are reading headlines about billion-dollar bets and 210-billion-token engineers and drawing reasonable but incomplete conclusions about what’s coming and how fast.
The AI Anxiety Gap, as I’d frame it, is less about fear of the technology itself and more about the experience of being outside the feedback loop. When you don’t have access to the tacit knowledge that comes from intensive use, you’re left interpreting signals from the outside — and those signals, filtered through financial news and hype cycles, are genuinely alarming even when the underlying reality is more complicated.
This is where I think the agent intelligence community has a real responsibility. The architecture decisions being made right now — how agents plan, how they use memory, how they handle uncertainty — will shape what these systems actually do in the world. Those decisions deserve more public scrutiny than they’re currently getting, and more honest communication about where the hard problems remain unsolved.
Tokenmaxxing is a symptom of a system where the people closest to the technology are pulling further ahead in their understanding of it. The spending numbers suggest that gap is about to get a lot wider before it gets any narrower.
