That gap is worth examining seriously, not just by OpenAI, but by every organization deploying AI systems at scale.
The Tumbler Ridge case is a small-town story with large-scale implications. It asks a question that the AI industry has been slow to answer clearly: when your system detects a threat to human life, what is your obligation beyond protecting your own platform? Right now, for most companies, the honest answer is: we’re still figuring that out.
That’s not good enough. And a letter, however sincere, doesn’t change the architecture that made the silence possible in the first place.
