The science team has been folded into other structures.
Read those facts together and a picture forms quickly. OpenAI is not just losing people — it is actively dismantling the organizational scaffolding that supported a certain kind of ambition. The kind that asks “what’s possible?” before asking “what’s profitable?”

Sora Was Never Just a Product

The “Side Quest” Framing Is Doing a Lot of Work

Science teams and exploratory research functions exist precisely because the path to capability is not always straight. The most important architectural insights rarely come from projects that were scoped to be useful from day one. They come from people given room to ask strange questions and build strange things. When an organization starts labeling that kind of work as a side quest, it’s worth asking what the main quest actually is — and whether the main quest, as currently defined, is broad enough to get you where you want to go.
Enterprise AI Is a Real Destination, But Not the Only One
None of this is to say the enterprise pivot is wrong. There is genuine, serious work to be done in making AI systems that are reliable, auditable, and useful inside complex organizational environments. Agent architectures that can operate across tools, maintain state, and reason about multi-step tasks in real business contexts — that’s hard, important, and underbuilt.
OpenAI has real advantages in that space and it makes sense to use them. The commercial logic is sound.
But the history of AI research suggests that the companies and labs that stay curious about the weird, expensive, hard-to-justify experiments tend to be the ones that find the next real capability jump. The ones that optimize too early for what the market wants today sometimes find themselves buying back the research they cut, at a much higher price, a few years later.
What the Architecture of an Organization Tells You
